The Worst The Bold and the Beautiful Storylines: Why Some Plot Choices Just Don’t Make Sense

The Bold and the Beautiful is on fire lately but their 2024 storylines often left fans angry or disappointed. From Taylor Hayes’ (Rebecca Budig) recast, Luna Nozawa’s (Lisa Yamada) blatant retcons, to the contentious plot surrounding broken heart syndrome. These plots left viewers frustrated with Brad Bell, the head writer and showrunner of the CBS soap opera.

1. Bill’s Lame Love Life: A Missed Opportunity

Bill Spencer, a character beloved by many fans, was grossly underutilized in 2024. From his relationship drama with Katie, to his ill-fated attempt at romance with Brooke, to the bizarre love triangle involving Poppy Lee, nothing seemed to click. Perhaps the most egregious moment was when Bill found himself in an uncomfortable romantic situation with Luna Naawa, a character who, after discovering Bill wasn’t her father, still tried to get romantically involved with him mere minutes later. The writers did nothing to rehabilitate Bill’s character this year. His past interactions with Sheila Carter were at least intriguing for a while, but his relationship with Poppy Lee was a strange, fast-moving affair that seemed to serve no purpose other than to add more confusion. For 2025, fans are hoping for something new, and perhaps a romance with Taylor could bring Bill back to relevance.

2. Swapping Thomas for Carter: Hope’s New Love Triangle

The writers’ decision to write out Thomas Forrester in favor of Carter Walton was a major misstep this year. The abrupt departure of Thomas left many fans scratching their heads, especially since there was no clear explanation for his absence. Hope Logan, once seen as the “good girl” of the Forrester family, found herself drawn into a new relationship with Carter — and not in the way viewers might have expected. In a strange twist, Hope began to transform into a more morally ambiguous character, engaging in shady business dealings and pursuing Carter romantically. This “Insta-love” shift felt jarring and disconnected from Hope’s usual character. Fans were left wondering if Thomas’ departure was permanent or if the character would eventually return to complicate Hope’s relationship with Carter.

3. Broken Heart Syndrome: A Questionable Recast

The recasting of Taylor Hayes, played by Rebecca Budig in 2024, became one of the most controversial decisions of the year. Fans were upset when Krista Allen was let go from the role, only for the show to claim that she was still under contract — a statement that turned out to be false. Then, instead of simply writing out Taylor, the storyline took a bizarre turn. Taylor returned, but not in the way fans expected. Instead of the character getting involved in compelling family drama, she was relegated to playing the role of a short-term romantic interest for Ridge Forrester, who was simultaneously dealing with his on-again, off-again relationship with Brooke Logan. The “broken heart syndrome” plotline also felt forced, as the character of Taylor, a trained doctor, couldn’t even identify the source of her own medical condition, making the whole situation seem unrealistic. It all led to a forgettable reunion that left many fans feeling unsatisfied.

4. Finn’s Cognitive Dissonance: A Doctor Gone Dumb

Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan, once a beloved character on the show, became a source of frustration in 2024. His inability to recognize Hope’s blatant advances toward him was one of the most ridiculous aspects of the year. Finn, a trained medical professional, seemed to completely lose his common sense and intelligence when it came to Hope’s flirtations. Despite the obvious signs that Hope was pursuing him, Finn remained clueless — even after she kissed him. Fans had hoped for some growth or maturity in Finn’s character, but instead, they were subjected to his lack of awareness and frustrating indecision. Although he did finally “do the right thing” by reporting Hope’s drunken kiss to Steffy, it didn’t make up for the numerous instances of him acting completely oblivious.

5. Zenday’s Character Assassination: A Messy Retcon

The most controversial and damaging plotline of 2024 involved Zenday Forrester. The character, once an upstanding and well-respected member of the Forrester family, was turned into a rapist in one of the most shocking and poorly executed twists of the year. The storyline involved Zenday allegedly raping Luna Naawa, a plot point that was poorly written from the outset. Luna was clearly drugged, and the whole situation felt contrived. Fans were outraged by the direction Zenday’s character was taken, and the backlash was immediate. The writers eventually attempted to retcon the plot, but the damage had already been done. Zenday was treated poorly by the other characters, including Brooke and others, who refused to apologize once it was revealed that Luna had been drugged. This storyline has been one of the darkest and most damaging in recent memory.

Looking Ahead: Can 2025 Be Any Better?

As we look ahead to 2025, fans are hoping for better storylines and a return to form for The Bold and the Beautiful. The show’s history has been filled with unforgettable drama, but the 2024 season left much to be desired. With the return of characters like Taylor and Bill possibly bringing fresh dynamics, there’s hope that the writers will listen to fan feedback and course-correct before it’s too late.

For now, fans can only hold out hope that 2025 will offer a more compelling and satisfying set of storylines that will truly capture the essence of The Bold and the Beautiful. Only time will tell if the soap can recover from the mistakes of 2024.
